Avoiding the dreaded Domain Squatters!
We are avid readers of the Telegraph Business Section and read with interest a feature in the Sunday Telegraph of 2nd September 2012.
John Olsen, partner and head of intellectual property at law firm Edwards Wildman, was quoted as saying that squatters "attempt to hold businesses to ransom, or in some cases, sell fake goods using the brand". Read full article.
What can you do to protect your web profile from squatters?
It is quite simple really but does involve spending money - an average of approx £10 per domain per year + lower £00s if you want to register your business name as a trademark in the UK (more if across several countries).
There are two steps to follow:
- Register your business name as a trademark if this is possible.
- Whether or not you register a trademark - not always within the budget of micro businesses, you should register more than one domain.
Example:
If you create a business called XYZ Limited, you may see that XYZ.CO.UK is available and register it.
Job done! Or is it?
Should you stop at registering ONE domain?
