File Transfer

FTP offers an alternative way to upload files (images, PDFs etc) to your website.

Once uploaded you then have to link to the files from within an article of your Joomla! website.

We recommend the use of an FTP client called FileZilla.

You can also use FTP to download (or back up) your website's directories and files.

The Importance of Backing Up

You are advised to regularly back up your Wynchcote website built on the Joomla! platform.

You should always back up your website before making significant changes such as:

  1. installing Joomla! extensions (example: an image gallery), or
  2. installing Joomla! upgrades following the announcement by the Joomla! Developer Community of a security release.

Performing regular routine backups will offer you peace of mind and

  1. reduce the risk of losing data from hacker attack, user error or server malfunction, and
  2. minimise the inconvenience caused by a hacker attack, user error or server malfunction.
To back up your whole website, you should download a copy of the whole of the httpdocs directory.

Important

If you website malfunctions as a result of you having replaced or deleted files on the server then you may incur administation charges when you seek help with the repair your website.

Security

NEVER save your FTP credentials (username and password) in your FTP uploaders cache (or short term memory).

If you do then these details may be harvested by spyware which you have inadvertantly downloaded onto your PC.

Example:

In FileZilla, always clear the following when exiting FileZilla:

    1. quick connect bar
    2. history

The inconvenience on a daily basis will be nothing compared to the hassle if you get 'hacked'!

You can reduce potential hassle following hacker attack by regularly backing up your website.

Where can you download FileZilla from?

You can otain a copy of the Filezilla application for free from here:

When you have installed Filezilla you may easily and quickly transfer files to and from the web server holding your website.

Joomla! 1.7 Users

Users of Joomla! 1.7 and beyond may ignore the reference to stories directory in the Step 5 illustration.

Users should instead upload their images to the images directory, or a directory within the images directory.

Joomla! 1.0 and 1.5 Users

Only those images uploaded to the stories directory, or a directory within the stories directory, will be accessible from their website's content editor.
