What does upgrade involve?
Upgrade typically involves:
- backing up of your existing website's database, directories and files;
- migration of your site's database to a format compatible with the latest version of Joomla!;
- sourcing of and installing compatible replacements for any currently used extensions (for example: site map, image rotator);
- testing of the upgraded website in a different server location to ensure there are no issues arising;
- replacing your current website with the new version of your website using the latest Joomla!
Note: if you are using a Wynchcote Joomla! Template then we will also upgrade your template to a format which is compatible with the latest version of Joomla!
Who should consider an upgrade?
Anyone who is running a Joomla! website which is earlier than Joomla! 1.7.
About Joomla! Releases
Whichever version of Joomla! you are using, you are advised to look out for new releases of your particluar version of Joomla!
For example, if your site is using Joomla! 2.5.0, then you should upgrade to the most recent release: Joomla! 2.5.1.
Users should also ensure they are using the latest version of any third party extensions being used by their Joomla! website, and remove old extensions which are no longer being used.

To prevent leaving your site open to hacker attack and improve its performance.
How easy is it to uprade your Joomla! website?
If you are using Joomla! 1.7 and beyond the the process is quite straightforward.
Upgrading is of itself not however the whole story; first you must backup your website. In some circumstances it is also advisable to test an upgraded website on a remote server before going live.
