What is a Canonical Redirect?
Did you know that your website's search engine ranking is being undermined by the fact that it does not have a 'Canonical Redirect' in place?
How is this? Search engines will not recognise separate visits to your website with and without the 'www' as being visits to one and the same site - they will instead register the visits as being to separate websites, one with and one without the 'www'!
In order to see what a Canonical Redirect refers to, try this little experiment:
- visit your website by entering your domain name in the browser address bar, inserting 'www' in front of the domain name;
- now do so again but this time without the 'www'.
If your website has a Canonical Redirect in place you will see the same address in the address bar each time it loads.
If however each time your site loads you see a different version of your website's name in the address bar (one with the 'www' prefix and one without this prefix), you do not have a Canonical Redirect in place.
If a Canonical Redirect is in place then this will consolidate all of your link popularity to a single domain, increasing your website's chances of obtaining top rankings, whether or not your visitors insert 'www' before the domain name.
